Today, the music industry is undergoing a metamorphosis. With the advent of the internet and digital technology, the way we consume music has changed dramatically. No longer are we confined to buying CDs or downloading songs from iTunes. We can now stream our favorite tunes on Spotify, Pandora, and other music-streaming platforms. With our method of listening to music having changed over the years, so too has the way in which artists are compensated for their work. In the past, artists were paid a few cents per song, and royalties were divided up among the songwriter, composer, and publisher. Today, however, the music industry is largely based on streaming, with artists paid a fraction of a penny per stream. As a result, many artists are struggling to make a living. In this blog post, we will take a look at the music industry of today and how much artists are paid per song. We will also discuss how royalties are collected and distributed. Finally, we will offer some suggestions on how we can support artists in the digital age

Firstly, One Of My Favorite Songs Is Called “2 You”, By Mariah The Scientist. Despite This Song Being One Of My Favorites, I Never Acknowledged All The Factors Involved Within The Music Industry That Are Also Applicable To This Artist And Their Song. Mariah The Scientist Is Under Two Record Labels, One Of Them Is RCA Records, And The Other Is One Umbrella Records. RCA Records Is Currently Owned By Sony Music Entertainment And Was Founded In 1900, Therefore It Has Much History Behind It Within The Music Industry. One Umbrella Records Was Founded And Is Currently Owned By Tory Lanez, Who Is Another Artist That Is Relatively Relevant In The Music Industry. The Subscription Service That I Use To Stream This Song Is Apple Music, Which Costs Me $4.99/Mo. On Average, Apple Music Pays $0.00783 Per Stream; This Particular Song Has A Total Of 7,830,515 Streams On Apple Music. Therefore, According To This Information, This Song Has A Total Revenue Of $61,312.93 On Apple Music. Although Mariah The Scientist Is Under 2 Different Record Labels, The Song “2 You” Was Released Via RCA Records. Newer Artists Under Large Record Labels Such As RCA Records Fall Between A Royalty Rate Range Of 13-16% So Lets Estimate That Her Royalty Rate Is The Average Amongst Those Two, 14.5%, Since Mariah The Scientist Is A Newer Artist. Based On This Information, Mariah The Scientist Earned $8,890.37 From “2 You” Via Apple Music Streaming, Whereas The Record Label Pocketed $52,422.56 From “2 You” Via Apple Music Streaming, They Collected On An Estimated 85.5% Of The Total Revenue Generated From This One Song. This Is A Demonstration Of The Unfair Practices That Most Label Companies Partake In, And Those Of Which The Artist Must Conform To Accept.

-Back from the dead
Another one of my favorite songs is called “Back from the Dead'' by Toosii. This artist is also under two record labels, one being Capitol Records, and the other is South Coast Music Group. Capitol records is owned by Universal Music Group and was founded in 1942. The current owner of South Coast Music Group is Arnold Taylor. This song “Back from the Dead'' accumulated a stream quantity of 14,089,117 on Apple Music, which still pays $0.00783 per stream. According to the data, the total revenue for this particular song is $110,317.70 on Apple Music alone. The artist Toosii is still considered a smaller and newer addition to the music industry, despite his large streaming numbers. Therefore, his royalty rate is also estimated to be at 14.5 %, which pockets him an estimate of $15,996.07. This is a huge difference to the payday that the label company receives, which is $94,321.6, as they pocket an 85.5% of total revenue from this one song on Apple Music.

One more main tune of mine is "Karma" by Summer Walker. Summer Walker is a notable R&B craftsman and is popular on all stages. Summer walker is endorsed to two record marks. Those being “Interscope Records” and “Love Renaissance”. The two record labels are claimed by the “Universal Music Group.” which was founded in 1996. As previously stated, my monthly Apple Music subscription is $4.99, which allows me to stream all types of songs from various artists and genres of music under the management of both her record labels "Interscope" and "Love Renaissance." Summer Walker's mixtape "Last Day of Summer, "was released on October 19, 2018, which includes the song "karma." With Apple Music paying 0.00783 per stream and Summer Walker's song "karma" being streamed 36,484,066 times on Apple Music. This song has earned a total of 28,567,024 dollars. With Summer walker being a known artist, her royalty percentage would be 20% which leaves her to pocket a total of 17,336.42 and the remaining 80% being 36,466,699.60 and goes into the pockets of her record label.
Although the impact of digital media may have its benefits, it seems as if there are more negatives, yet they are not openly criticized due to the general public not being aware of such ugly practices. I claim that the general public is not aware of these practices (as they pertain to royalty rates), because I myself was not aware of this information until coming across further and more insightful research. I find it wrong that artists must conform to accept the pay for their music in order to attain success in their career. It seems as if there is an imbalanced power dynamic between artists and their record labels. This imbalanced power dynamic can be very dangerous to both the artist and consumer. This large imbalance of power allows record labels to determine whose careers go where and what influence consumers receive, whether it is good or bad. I ultimately believe that the power dynamic should be more balanced simply because the music put out there is a product of the artist, not necessarily a product of the record label. Record labels partake in unfair distribution of revenue and something such as a 30%/70% split or 45%/55% split seems more plausible.

In this blog post, we will take a look at the music industry of today and how much artists are paid per song. We will also discuss how royalties are collected and distributed. Finally, we will offer some suggestions on how we can support artists in the digital age

-2 you
Firstly, One Of My Favorite Songs Is Called “2 You”, By Mariah The Scientist.

-Karma

Ariana is the eldest girl of 15 siblings, 5 brothers and 10 sisters. Family time is important as it shows unity and allows for sibling relationships to strengthen and grow. Despite everyone's different schedule and day to day life, she is always available for her family. Ariana came out to her family very early on and though she was the Princess of the family it was a bit difficult for them to accept that she just wanted to live the fairy tale life with a princess instead of a prince. She has always been involved in sports and helps wherever she can even if it is just by paying it forward. She is a very open and calm person making her an easy-going person and someone you can just count on.

As mentioned above Ariana has always had an interest in sports become more involved and fully vested as she got older. She participated in the following.... Football, Basketball, Track and field, Softball and, Wrestling. After being in a car accident her senior year of high school she wasn't able to participate in any sports and even after high school she believed her track and wrestling career was over. Ariana was forced to stop participating in sports after the car accident due to the extent of her injuries and this brought on severe depression and social withdraw. Ariana had confirmed to the norm of not playing sports though her heart and soul yearned to be back in the action playing the field. Shortly after coming to terms with that she came across the WNFC (woman's national football conference) and was able to find a team in her city and work through the pain and endurance that the team required and her injuries had imposed. Ariana is now a starting offensive guard and defensive tackle for the Las Vegas SilverStar's.

Aside from all of that, Ariana finds great interest in traveling to different states and visiting new cities. She is always eager to engage in different experiences, witness foreign environments first-hand, and interact with different personalities and cultures. As a result of her thirst for adventure and passion for truly living the world, she has worked hard to be able to travel across a total of 18 states. Those states include Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Missouri, Tennessee, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana and Georgia. Though Ariana has enjoyed the unique experiences that each of the states and their cities have provided, there is no doubt in her mind that Chicago, Illinois is her favorite destination amongst all the adventures that she has engaged in. Breezy weather that pays homage to the nickname of the "Windy City", authentic and amazing deep-dish pizza, and uniquely bold iconic buildings, and more, have forever captured the heart of Ariana to the point in which she finds herself frequenting the City of Chicago often.

The two medias that Ariana finds an interest in are social media and broadcast media. Ariana enjoys social media as it allows for keeping up to date with the lives of family members and friends around the country, even though they may not keep in regular contact due to busy life. Additionally, social media makes it easier to connect with other individuals who share similar interests which then extends to the possibility of making new friends! Broadcast media is another interest of Ariana because it informs of current events and what is going on within the country and around the world. As it concerns media, Ariana would like to learn more about writing styles when it comes to publishing content, tactics that can be used to boost interaction with established content, and how media keeps up to date with the information in the ever-changing world
